Overview

Each week, fellows present 3 cases as unknowns to faculty discussants. The faculty share their clinical reasoning and teaching pearls as they discuss the case with the audience with an eye towards arriving at the correct diagnosis. Each case concludes with the fellows providing 1-2 teaching points relevant to the case. On a periodic basis, short didactic sessions (~ 5-7 minutes in length) are added to the session to provide focused education on specific topics such as chest radiology, point-of-care ultrasound, respiratory physiology and mechanical ventilation.

Objectives
  1. Describe the clinical presentation, diagnosis and management of various forms of diffuse parenchymal lung disease
  2. Describe the clinical presentation, diagnosis and management of various diseases affecting both the upper and lower airways
  3. Describe the clinical presentation, diagnosis and management of patients presenting with acute hypoxemic respiratory failure or septic shock
  4. Describe the clinical presentation, findings on polysomnography and management of patients with various forms of sleep-disorderd breathing
  5. Describe the clinical presentation, diagnosis and management of bacterial, viral, fungal and mycobacterial infections affecting the respiratory system
  6. Recognize, diagnose and manage respiratory complications of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation or treatment of other forms of malignancy
  7. Describe the clinical presentation, diagnosis and management of neurologic emergencies including intracranial hemorrhage, cerebrovascular accident and traumatic brain injury
  8. Describe the clinical presentation, diagnosis and management of toxidromes and toxic metabolic encephalopathies
  9. Describe the clinical presentation, diagnosis and management of pleural, chest wall and neuromuscular disorders
  10. Describe the clinical presentation, diagnosis and management of respiratory complications seen in people living with HIV
