Overview

SOLD OUT! Onsite registrations will not be accepted.

Pain is nearly ubiquitous in primary care, with an estimated 40% of older adults experiencing some form of chronic pain. The guidelines for providers and the regulations they are expected to follow have become more and more restrictive about the dosing and duration of opioid treatment as the evidence of potential harms has become clearer. At the same time, changes in insurance coverage have brought many more patients into primary care practices who have previously had poor access to care and may still have poor access to specialty care. The Loeser conference series is designed to fill the need for actionable, evidence-based pain care strategies among primary care providers, including physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants.

Our topics for this conference will include issues of movement and physical therapy, overcoming resistance to treatment recommendations, management of pain with comorbid substance use and psychiatric disorders, and headache treatment. There will be a reduced focus on opioid treatments, primarily on the new Center for Disease Control guidelines and on weaning opioids. All presentations will be provided in a didactic format using Powerpoint slides to provide evidence-based, actionable information that can be used by the primary care provider without additional consultation of staffing. There will be question and answer sessions after each block of lectures.

Case Presentations: During the lunch hour, an optional case discussion session will be led by the speakers.
