Overview

The three-year UW research project, Augmented Momentary Personal Ecological Risk Evaluation (AMPERE), is a User centered design (UCD) study funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH) to develop and pilot an ecological momentary assessment (EMA) suicide risk monitoring system to support primary care suicide risk management. The goal of the project is to develop a suicide risk monitoring system that will improve risk management for young adults experiencing suicidality, their family, and the healthcare team and to make primary care treatment a more therapeutic experience. Dr. Ian Bennett (UWPC-Northgate), is the principal investigator. We aim to improve outcomes for patients without overburdening providers/provider teams. The 6-month pilot will test the feasibility and acceptability of the developed AMPERE prototype. 40-50 young adult (16-30) patients** of 10 UW providers will use the AMPERE app providing data to their participating provider. Providers will participate in monthly AMPERE ECHO clinical skill and case review sessions. Providers will complete two feedback surveys (1, 6-months).

Objectives
  1. Demonstrate how to administer the Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS) and interpret its results for identifying levels of suicide risk
  2. Learn techniques for monitoring suicidality between appointments, including appropriate check-ins and the use of telehealth tools
  3. Identify key indicators that necessitate immediate interventions when suicidality risk escalates between appointments
  4. Understand how to incorporate patient-centered goals into a tailored treatment plan using Behavioral Activation as a brief supportive counseling approach
  5. Practice facilitating shared decision-making with patients, ensuring treatment options align with the patient’s values and preferences
  6. Develop skills to continuously reassess and adjust treatment plans based on ongoing feedback from the patient, ensuring flexibility and responsiveness to changes in risk
  7. Create a standard approach for managing suicide risk within a generalist setting, including safety planning and appropriate referrals
  8. Learn strategies to engage family and friends as part of the suicide risk treatment plan, focusing on communication, support, and safety
  9. Gain knowledge about how to establish clear roles for healthcare providers, patients, and families in ongoing suicide risk management
  10. Learn strategies for culturally competent suicide risk detection and intervention in diverse communities, with a focus on reducing barriers to care
  11. Apply patient-centered approaches in suicide risk assessment and monitoring that respect individual backgrounds, including race/ethnicity, gender identity, and socioeconomic status
  12. Enhance their ability to identify and address unique suicide risk factors in special populations, such as perinatal individuals, transgender youth, and others
  13. Evaluate when hospitalization is necessary for adolescents and young adults experiencing suicide risk, based on clinical and contextual factors
  14. Explore the ethical and legal considerations involved in involuntary vs. voluntary hospitalization for suicide prevention
  15. Develop decision-making frameworks for balancing the benefits and drawbacks of hospitalization, considering patient autonomy and safety
