OT2306: All Patients Safe: Suicide Prevention for Medical Providers

This activity consists of four online courses and a live component that it is an alternative to two of the online courses. A learner may complete one or more courses, depending on their professional role and their interest in different aspects of suicide prevention.

Two of the online courses, All Patients Safe, provide general training in suicide prevention for medical professionals: a 3-hour basic course and a 6-hour basic + advanced course. We also plan to offer the 3-hour and/or the 6-hour course live on an occasional basis. These courses, in both the online and the live option, meet state requirements for Suicide Prevention Training for all providers in Washington State. This training provides an important vehicle: 1) to alert
medical providers to evidence based suicide care that is relevant not only in their professional practice but in their personal lives and, equally importantly, 2) to orient medical providers to important health care system changes that are needed to keep all patients safe. It integrates evidence based practice with materials from the Safer Homes Suicide Aware public health campaign and the popular LEARN™ mnemonic.

The two remaining online courses extend and supplement the above training for interested providers: (1) Targeted Interventions: Firearms, Culture, and Suicide Care is a 3-hour course designed to give learners an opportunity to explore their attitudes related to firearms and how these attitudes might affect clinical care; gain knowledge of cultural factors related to firearm ownership and use; and learn a framework for conducting lethal means counseling.
(2) Hope and Recovery for Everyone: Cultural Factors in Suicide Care is a one-hour course that explores distinctive patterns of suicide-related outcomes among different cultural groups, describes frameworks for understanding the role of cultural factors in clinical care generally and suicide risk specifically, and suggests the use of two clinical tools that help to incorporate cultural factors into the assessment and management of suicide risk.

Accreditation with Commendation: The University of Washington School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Credit Designation: The University of Washington School of Medicine designates this other activity for a maximum of 10.00 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
