Overview
Neurological Surgery Grand Rounds consists of weekly Wednesday lectures and presentations from 7am-8am on a range of clinical topics concerning the nervous system. • Multiple monthly speakers from the UW are invited to give one-hour presentations on relevant clinical or basic scientific subjects dealing with anatomical, physiological, molecular or behavioral aspects of the nervous system. • Multiple one-hour neuropathology conferences are presented during the year. These are clinical presentation/diagnostic workshops that include relevant preoperative imaging findings, operative procedures and findings. • Multiple one-hour neurospine based conferences are presented during the year. These are clinical presentation/diagnostic workshops that include relevant preoperative imaging findings, operative procedures and findings. • Multiple times per year, multiple faculty present updates on research they have been working on in their labs. • Multiple times per year, sub-internship medical students present research they have been working on during their medical school education. • Annually, residents present research they have been working on during their residency during 3 subsequent Grand Rounds sessions. • Annually, fellows present research they have been working on during their fellowship year. • At least once a year per year, Dr. Nathaniel Watson is invited to speak about sleep health and fatigue mitigation directed especially to our trainees in addition to our faculty. * At least once a year a speaker is invited to speak about wellness directed to our trainees in addition to faculty. • Once per month, a morbidity and mortality analysis and presentation is scheduled and is only open to members of the Neurological Surgery. • Multiple times per year, renowned Visiting Professors from other academic institutions are invited to educate us on an important and timely neuroscience subjects that we deem essential for the well-educated and up-to-date neurological surgeon.

Objectives
  1. Discuss a novel endovascular device that induces upstream spiral flow to reduce aneurysm dome pressure and inflow; Discuss computational and bench data supporting the mechanism and feasibility of spiral-flow induction; Discuss potential applications alongside traditional aneurysm treatments such as coils, stents, and flow diverters; Discusses limitations, contraindications, and next steps for preclinical development.   2. Discuss 3 ways to measure functional outcomes after surgery: Karnofsky-Performance Scale, Modified Rankin Scale, and Neurological Motor Eam; Discuss the limitations of the literature looking at social determinants of health on neuropsychological outcomes after pediatric epilepsy surgery.   3. Discuss the clinical and technical challenges of ALIF cage screw placement and their impact on patient outcomes. Describe the process of translating a surgical need into a functional medical device through needs finding, prototyping, and validation. Discuss how structured innovation programs, such as the THRIVE Fellowship, can accelerate point-of-care technology development and training. (Odland)
