Overview

The 16th Annual John D. Loeser Pain Conference focuses on the practical approaches to clinical and non-clinical management of common chronic pain conditions. Some of the topics include fibromyalgia management, difficult pain conversations, pain psychology, and integrative approaches to pain. In addition, the faculty will provide updates on proposed changes to WA opioid prescribing rules, buprenorphine use, migraine management, and more.

PROGRAM VENUE:
University of Washington Tower
Tower Auditorium
4333 Brooklyn Ave NE
Seattle, WA 98195

Objectives
  1. Apply current evidence-based guidelines and Washington State regulations to optimize the ability of healthcare teams to provide safe and effective opioid prescribing, tapering, and monitoring in patients with acute and chronic pain.
  2. Understand how to appropriately integrate buprenorphine into pain management plans for healthcare teams, including appropriate patient selection, initiation strategies, and ongoing management in primary care settings.
  3. Implement multimodal, non-opioid pain management strategies, to support healthcare teams, including pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic therapies (e.g., acupuncture, physical therapy, and integrative approaches), tailored to individual patient needs.
  4. Utilize evidence-based diagnostic and treatment approaches for common chronic pain conditions such as migraine and fibromyalgia in primary care practice.
  5. Demonstrate effective communication strategies, including motivational interviewing and shared decision-making, to aid healthcare teams in addressing challenging pain conversations and aligning treatment plans with patient goals.
  6. Incorporate behavioral health and pain psychology principles, including use of digital tools and referral resources, to support healthcare teams in providing holistic, biopsychosocial pain management.
  7. Collaborate effectively with interprofessional team members to coordinate comprehensive pain care, overcoming common barriers such as limited time, access, and resource constraints.
  8. Apply case-based clinical reasoning to aid healthcare teams in managing complex patients with chronic pain, including those with comorbid mental health conditions or substance use concerns, in real-world primary care settings.
