OT2504: Advanced Training in Healthcare Ethics Online Certificate Program

This annual 3-quarter online course is designed to develop clinical ethics and ethical reasoning skills, with in-depth studies of 1) important ethical frameworks that are the foundation of modern medical ethics and contemporary clinical practice; 2) the relationship between clinical and organizational ethics, including analysis of bioethics cases and policies related to informed consent, foregoing life support, moral distress, just allocation of health care resources, etc.; and 3) case-based practice in clinical ethics including methods of ethical analysis and writing ethics consultation chart notes. The program helps prepare attendees for the American Society for Bioethics & Humanities Core Competencies in Health Care Ethics Consultation certification examination. Modules are designed to provide participants with skills and information sufficient to enable them to serve on ethics committees and participate in ethics consultations regarding complex clinical situations.

1. Understand important theoretical frameworks of modern medical ethics
2. Identify fundamental concepts and principles for the understanding of ethical issues in clinical care
3. Analyze clinical and organizational ethics cases related to informed consent, foregoing life support, death by neurological criteria, moral distress, allocation of health care resources, etc.
4. Utilize bioethics methods for analyzing ethical cases in clinical health care
5. Employ skills in decision-making for clinical cases that present ethical problems
6. Discuss current issues and cases in health care ethics
7. Write ethics consultation chart notes
