Overview

Neurological Surgery Grand Rounds consists of weekly Wednesday lectures and presentations from 7 am -8 am on a range of clinical topics concerning the nervous system. • Multiple monthly speakers from the UW and/or visiting professors from other academic institutions are invited to give one-hour presentations on relevant clinical or basic scientific subjects dealing with anatomical, physiological, molecular or behavioral aspects of the nervous system. • Multiple one-hour neuropathology conferences are presented during the year. These are clinical presentation/diagnostic workshops that includes relevant preoperative imaging findings, operative procedures and findings. • Multiple one-hour neurospine based conferences are presented during the year. These are clinical presentation/diagnostic workshops that includes relevant preoperative imaging findings, operative procedures and findings. • Multiple times per year, multiple faculty present updates on research they have been working on in their labs. • Multiple times per year, sub-internship medical students present research they have been working on during their medical school education. • Annually, residents present research they have been working on during their residency during 3 subsequent Grand Rounds sessions. • Annually, fellows present research they have been working on during their fellowship year. • Multiple times per year, Dr. Nathaniel Watson is invited to speak about sleep health and fatigue mitigation directed especially to our trainees in addition to our faculty. * At least once a year a speaker is invited to speak about wellness directed to our trainees in addition to faculty • Once per month, a morbidity and mortality analysis and presentation is scheduled and is only open to members of the Neurological Surgery. • Multiple times per year, renowned Visiting Professors are invited to educate us on an important and timely neuroscience subjects that we deem essential for the well-educated and up-to-date neurological surgeon.

Objectives
  1. Discuss up to date, relevant clinical or basic scientific information dealing with anatomical, physiological, molecular or behavioral aspects of the nervous system to assist faculty and trainees in improving their practice.
  2. Highlight specific research endeavors engaged by our faculty and trainees to support the educational mission of producing the next generation of surgeon scientists.
  3. Review and critique morbidity and mortality events within the department of Neurological Surgery to support both self-reflective practice and collegial dialogue in an effort to improve outcomes.
