2024 CLIME Together Symposium: Distinguishing Necessary and Unnecessary Struggles and Discomfort in Health Sciences Education

This year’s symposium focuses on the challenging topic of “Distinguishing Necessary and Unnecessary Struggle and Discomfort in Health Sciences Education.” 

 
Our plenary speaker is Dr. Lisa Rosenbaum, a practicing cardiologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and assistant professor at Harvard Medical School. She is also a national correspondent for the New England Journal of Medicine where she hosts the podcast Not Otherwise Specified (NOS). Dr. Rosenbaum explores and writes about the interface of medicine and the human experience; her recent article on “Being Well While Doing Well” has prompted national dialogue around the changing landscape of medical training. 

In the last talk of the morning, Dr. Addie McClintock will help us consider a path forward. She will discuss balancing wellbeing, learning and preparation in health professions education. Dr. McClintock is the director of the University of Washington Teaching Scholars Program, and an expert on psychological safety in the clinical learning environment.

1. Analyze the perceived tension between "rigor" and "wellbeing" in medical education and physician training  

2. Understand that psychological safety, "desirable difficulty," and positive learning climate are critical for physician learning and preparation

3. Reconcile the goals of rigor and wellbeing, instead of seeing them as in tension
