The University of Washington's TelePain program offers weekly virtual learning sessions designed to empower healthcare providers caring for patients with chronic pain. Rooted in UW's rich history of adopting a multidisciplinary, biopsychosocial framework to the study and management of pain, TelePain uses videoconferencing technology to bridge geographic distances and create a robust community of learners across multiple states. Our goal is to engage and empower providers through evidence-based education and interactive case-based learning, enabling them to deliver comprehensive, high-quality pain care in their respective communities. We believe that learning happens not only from expert faculty but also through peer-to-peer collaboration. Providers are encouraged to share both their challenges and successes, discuss complex cases, and suggest educational topics that address their real-world needs. TelePain sessions meet weekly and include a dynamic mix of educational formats: 1) Didactic Lectures (twice monthly): Evidence-based presentations delivered by content experts, focusing on common challenges in pain management, especially within primary care settings. Our curriculum aligns closely with the International Association for the Study of Pain's discipline-specific and interprofessional curricula and established core competencies for pain management. 2) Case Presentations: Community providers present cases about patients with complex chronic pain, followed by expert panel recommendations and an interactive group discussion. These real-world cases provide practical learning opportunities and allow participants to gain insights from interdisciplinary pain specialists. 3) Topical Discussions: Collaborative exploration of clinical questions, emerging research, or new publications relevant to pain management practices. 4) Interactive Q&A: Ongoing opportunities throughout each session for participants to ask questions, seek guidance, and engage in meaningful dialogue with peers and interdisciplinary pain specialists. 5) Asynchronous Learning Opportunities: Didactics lectures are recorded and posted to Vimeo to enable asynchronous learning. Providers may claim CME by completing the evaluation after viewing a recorded didactic lecture. Live TelePain sessions are designed to maximize learning and accommodate providers from multiple time zones. Providers are encouraged to join for any portion of the session that is compatible with their schedule, and they may claim up to 1.5 CME credits per live session (up to 72 credits total for January through December 2026). Weekly session format: 2nd & 4th Wednesdays - Didactic lecture (12-12:30pm PST) with Q&A and case presentations from the community (11:30am-12pm and 12:30-1:30pm PST). 1st Wednesdays - In-depth case-based learning featuring cases from the UW Pain & Opioid Provider Hotline and clinical practice (12-1pm PST) with additional case presentations from the community (11:30am-12pm and 1-1:30pm PST). 3rd Wednesdays - Deep-dive discussions on clinical questions or recent literature (12-1pm PST) and case presentations from the community (11:30am-12pm and 1-1:30pm PST). TelePain creates a supportive, collaborative learning environment where community providers can enhance their knowledge, refine their skills, and build confidence in managing complex pain conditions—all while connecting with colleagues across the region.
