The VA hospitalist group has a monthly journal club reviewing recent publications relevant to hospital medicine. One hospitalist a month will select an article of their choosing which they review in detail and present to the group. There is time for group analysis and questions, as well as discussion on how the article will (or will not) change or affirm current practice. This activity helps keep the group up to date, which then results in more informed attending physicians and teachers for our learners. The audience also frequently includes physicians and NPs from the ED and Primary Care Clinics who are always invited to attend.

1. General objectives for all the talks: 1. Review studies published in last 3-6 (ish) months 2. Select studies relevant to hospital medicine 3. Develop group consensus on “take home points” – how will studies will change our practice (or not!) 
2. Individual objectives will also be determined for each talk based on the article presented. As an example: MINT trial reviewed for journal club. Specific objectives for this article include 1. state the transfusion goal for patients with acute MI based on this study 2. understand which patient population may benefit from a higher transfusion threshold 3. discuss the limitations of this study and how that impacts the results 4. develop a clinical practice take away from reviewing this article
