DC2719: Bridging Distance: Reflection and Resources in the Aftermath of Gun Violence

This educational activity will explore the clinical, emotional, and community impact of gun violence through an interdisciplinary and evidence-informed approach. Participants will review current research, examine violence intervention and prevention strategies, and discuss trauma-informed and therapeutic communication techniques to support patients, families, caregivers, and healthcare professionals impacted by violence. The program includes keynote presentations, breakout sessions, community partnership perspectives, and facilitated discussion designed to encourage reflection, strengthen collaboration, and identify opportunities to improve patient care, caregiver support, and community outcomes.

1. Describe trauma-informed and therapeutic communication strategies for caring for patients with gun-related injuries (GRIs) and their families.
2. Identify reflective practices, including narrative medicine approaches, to process Apply reflective practices, including narrative medicine techniques, to process challenging clinical experiences and support compassionate, trauma-informed care for patients with gun-related injuries and their families.
3. Recognize structural and interpersonal barriers that affect trust and patient-provider relationships for patients with GRIs.
4. Identify hospital-based and community-based resources available to support patients with GRIs during hospitalization and after discharge.
5. Apply interdisciplinary and community-informed strategies to improve collaboration, caregiver support, and patient outcomes related to gun violence.
