Broadus Zane Atkins, MD

Dr. Atkins is Associate Professor of Surgery at UW Medicine and Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Puget Sound VA. He is a graduate of Duke University Medical School and the Duke Univ Hospital training programs for general and thoracic surgery.

Dr. Atkins is Board Certified in Thoracic Surgery, and has been in practice since 2007. He is a US Air Force veteran with the rank of Colonel and was Chief of CT Surgery, David Grant USAF Medical Center ('12-'16).

Clinical interests include adult cardiac surgery, heart artery bypass procedures, minimally invasive heart valve operations, surgical management of heart failure, (including heart pumps and transplantation) diseases of the thoracic aorta, (including aneurysms) and surgical management of heart rhythm disorders.

Research interests include patient safety, team-based approaches to specialty care delivery, surgical reconstruction of treated chest infections, less invasive approaches to heart failure and heart valve disorders, and cellular and genetic therapy for end-stage heart disease.
