Irfan M. Asif, MD

Dr. Asif is the director of the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship and Vice Chair of Academics and Research in the Department of Family Medicine. He is certified in both family medicine and sports medicine. He has served as a team physician for all levels of athletics, including high school, collegiate, and professional sports programs. He is an Associate Editor for Sports Health: A Multidisciplinary Approach and the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

Dr. Asif currently serves on the AMSSM Board of Directors and has provided service on the AMSSM Research, Fellowship, Public Relations, and Annual Meeting Program Planning (Program Chair 2014-2015) Committees. His research has earned honors within sports medicine (2010 AMSSM Best Overall Research Award, 2011 Harry L. Galanty Young Investigators Award) and primary care as a whole (2014 University of Tennessee GSM Excellence & Leadership in Clinical Research, 2012 Society of Teachers for Family Medicine Best Overall Research Paper). Current investigations explore several domains within sports cardiology, as well as areas within Lifestyle and Exercise Medicine.

As a teacher, Dr. Asif is committed to education and has been awarded the STFM Resident Teaching Award (2010) and the University of Tennessee Faculty Teaching Award (2012). He has served as the chair of the AMSSM Sports Medicine In-Service Training Exam (ITE) subcommittee, which writes the ITE yearly to prepare sports medicine physicians to pass the Sports Medicine CAQ Exam. He is currently the chair of the AMSSM Fellowship Committee and serves on the AMSSM Collaborative Research Network Leadership Team.
